Serda Simus — Backend Engineer (Python/FastAPI) | NYC

I build backend services that are tested, containerized, and observable — not just “it works on my machine” services.

Open to Backend leaning roles
  • Focus: FastAPI + PostgreSQL + Redis + Docker + Cloud Native (reliable, production-style services)
  • Interests: data-heavy systems, platform tooling, distributed patterns
  • Status: Open to backend leaning roles and collaborations

What I'm Doing Now

  • Shipping a small set of end-to-end services (auth, background jobs, docs, CI/CD, monitoring)
  • Hardening execution: Commit → Ship → Iterate
  • Desiging, building and deploying consistently.
  • Slowly progressing through Kleppman's primer and book
  • Speedrunning ByteByteGo Volumes 1 and 2.
  • Speedrunning boot.dev backend program for Go services [A move towards better Concurrency, and The Perfs])

What I Build

  • APIs(REST + GraphQL, and gRPC is next) with clean boundaries, built-in validations, sane error handling, decoupled, 12-Factored, and containerized.
  • Data services (Postgres-first, cache where it matters, migrations done right)
  • Background work (queues/jobs, retries, idempotency)
  • Production hygiene: tests, structured logging, metrics/tracing, CI pipelines

Stack (Current + Relevant)

  • Languages: Python, SQL, JavaScript (plus Go in progress)
  • Backend: FastAPI, REST, async patterns
  • Data: PostgreSQL, Redis
  • Infra/Dev: Docker, GitHub Actions, Linux
  • Observability: structured logs, metrics/tracing (Prometheus/Grafana-style workflows)

Principles (How I Work)

  • “Senior” is standards, not years: testing + deployability + monitoring
  • Small scope, fast feedback, tight loops
  • Prefer boring tech that ships — optimize only when it’s earned

Connect

Ship complete systems. Then ship the next one.
